Creative and striking graphics can really elevate a researcher’s or academic communication in various ways, from informal lab meetings to conference posters and talks, and ultimately publications. However, despite the necessity of visual communication, developing this skill can be challenging and may not be a central aspect of graduate classwork.

A useful creative tool to generate graphics is the software Adobe Illustrator. However, learning how to navigate and use Illustrator is a steep learning curve. For students who have little experience with the software, it can be a daunting, time-consuming task. The purpose of this workshop is to cover the basics of Adobe Illustrator and provide the tools for students to begin generating their own graphics.

The workshop will cover:

  • Navigating the Adobe Illustrator user interface
  • Understanding the different functions of basic Adobe Illustrator tools
  • Color choices
  • Balancing aesthetics and style with communication
  • Careful use and considerations in using Illustrator’s AI text-to-image tool.

This workshop will be most useful for students who have an Adobe Illustrator license, although all are welcome. Students are encouraged to bring a sketch of a graphic they would like to create digitally. In addition to learning Illustrator tools, students will get 1-on-1 help on designing their graphics.
