Informal, friendly, chock-full of snacks!

Purpose: Assist students with exam preparation and post-exam evaluation of study strategies.

Motivation: After students take exams in science and math courses, sometimes they comment that the rigor of exam questions surprised them. Comments like "the exam was harder than I expected" and "I didn't know what to do with that question" are commonly heard. The overarching goal of these workshops is to help students unpack these concerns and set a self-monitoring evaluation. We will share techniques to support academic success in taking (and preparing for) exams

Prepping for your next exam - March 29, 2015, Hall of Flags, Houston Hall, 1 to 3 pm

  • Bring along a practice or sample exam for a future test

Each student will work individually with their own materials. Students will reflect on their own experiences through a structured process and will not be expected to share personal or academic details with their peers. In small group and individual activities, we will explore the overall structure of questions in science and math courses by using an updated version of Bloom's Taxonomy and discuss strategies for learning from personal performance in the past as well as effective use of practice exam questions. We discuss four apps - Evernote, Notability, Simple Mind and Coggle IT - that can help with study strategies. We discuss discipline-specific practices in small groups.
