Informal, friendly, chock-full of snacks!

Open to: Undergraduates enrolled in mathematics, science or engineering courses

Purpose: Demonstrate feasible and adaptable study strategies for exam prep and introduce resources available at the Tutoring Center, Weigle Information Commons and the Weingarten Learning Resources Center.

Motivation: Sometimes the nature and rigor of exam questions can be surprising. Comments like "the exam was harder than I expected" and "I didn't know what to do with that question" are commonly heard.

Take Away: Students can understand the nature of STEM coursework and unpack exam questions.

If possible, bring along your previously completed exam

Format: Students will individually survey their materials and reflect on exam experiences through a guided process. Students will not be expected to divulge personal or academic details, although sharing of ideas/experiences is encouraged. Small group and individual activities will explore the overall structure of questions in science and math courses by using an updated version of Bloom's Taxonomy and discuss strategies for learning with effective use of practice exam questions. Additionally, four apps - EvernoteNotabilitySimple Mind and Coggle IT - that can reinforce study strategies will be introduced. Lastly, discipline-specific study strategies will be shared by tutors.
