Reaxys takes on PubChem in all things properties, while smaller databases like the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, the Combined Chemical Dictionary, the Merck Index, and the NIST Chemistry Web Book assert their authority in their areas of expertise.  SciFinder-n and ChemSpider round out the list of competitors in the following challenges: finding physical properties of known compounds, locating health and safety data, and profiling substances by properties.   In-person attendees should meet in the Chemistry Library Computer Lab.

More information:

Everyone loves a good competition, and we at the Chemistry Library are no exceptions.  Inspired by cooking shows we love to watch, we are proud to present the second Great Chemistry Search-Off.  In this series of training seminars, the databases are the competitors, and you get to put them through their paces each week, comparing their capabilities as you learn to perform three thematic tasks.  At the end of each session, attendees will rank the databases based on their performance in each task and determine which tool(s) will earn the coveted honor of “Stellar Resource.”

Each session will last for 75 minutes, including time for questions and answers, and you can attend as many or as few as you would like; you don’t need to come to all five.  For an added challenge, you can bring your own “ingredients” (a device and queries or research questions that match each week’s theme).  You can attend in-person or online, whichever is more convenient or comfortable for you.

Registration has closed.
