South Asia Studies Digital Humanities Workshop: South Asian Languages & Collections as Data

This day's sessions introduce computational methods as a way of analyzing multilingual texts originating from the South Asian region. These computational methods are an intervention that allows such texts to be read as data.

The talks are open to the public, may be presented in a hybrid format, and will be recorded for sharing at a later date.

Apply to Participate in the Hands-On Worksop

The hands-on workshop will introduce scholars of South Asia to digital tools for Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) for the practical purpose of searching through texts for specific keywords. OCR and HTR make it possible to transform archival sources into searchable texts. Participants must be prepared to attend both days of the workshop, particularly in the hands-on closed sessions, as well as a prior software installation session. South Asia Studies scholars are invited to apply (tinyurl.com/SASDHWForm) to attend these hands-on workshop sessions. Drop by the Python Installation Party for questions on Python, OCR basics, and Kathi rolls.

Registration is required. There are 21 in-person seats available. There are 63 online seats available.
