The 12 Hour Declaration of Independence: Community Typesetting
Event box
The first edition of the Declaration was typeset and printed within 12 hours starting on July 4, 1776. To honor the 250th anniversary of the Declaration, Common Press will host a 12 hour, three day community typesetting event during which all are invited to hand-set metal type to help create a historically-accurate replica. (we have to do it over 3 days to accommodate library schedules!) The final forme of metal type will remain available for printing on our 19th-century hand press through 2026.
This event is free and open to the public, but you will need either a PennCard or a photo ID to enter the building. If you don't have a PennCard, you will need to bring a photo ID and sign in at the security desk at the entrance to Fisher Fine Arts Library for access. See University access guidelines here.
