Professor Javier del Barco, the 2025-2026 Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies & the Herbert D. Katz Center Distinguished Fellow in Jewish Manuscript Studies, will lead a workshop focusing on MS Codex 1052 of the University of Pennsylvania, described in the Library’s online catalog as a Hebrew Bible with Masora possibly produced in Modena, Italy, around 1480. It is indeed a Hebrew Bible produced in northern Italy in the second half of the fifteenth century, but a close examination of its codicological, textual, and historical features, however, can shed further light on the context of its production and potentially reveal the identity of some of its first owners. Professor del Barco will lead attendees through an examination of the manuscript to establish clues to its history and provenance.
To be held in the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books, and Manuscripts, Seminar Rm 627. Seating is limited, but open to all.
