Need a break from digital tools? Learn how to make your own notebook from basic materials gathered around the house -- for taking notes, journaling, sketching, gifting, and more.

Common Press is a makerspace for analog technologies, housed in the fine arts library. We have printing presses and type dating from 1850 to 1963. We offer workshops in book making, printing, and related practices.

To follow along, you will need the following supplies:

  • a stack of paper - standard printer paper is fine. 6 - 12 sheets.
  • optional - 1 piece of heavier / different colored / decorative paper, same size as paper stack, for covers.
  • needle and thread - a heavier, sturdier thread is best if you have access to this. Embroidery floss or a thinner beading thread will work. Even dental floss will work! Just make sure you can thread it through your needle.
  • pair of scissors
  • push pin and scrap of cardboard (or something else to protect your table while we're punching holes)
