The Biomedical Library’s next (virtual) Biomeditations Book Talk on Wednesday, March 31st, at 3PM, will feature Dr. Jason Karlawish speaking about his new and much-anticipated book, The Problem of Alzheimer’s, “a lucid, opinionated history of the science, politics, and care involved in the fight against this century’s most problematic disease.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Dr. Jason Karlawish is professor of medicine, medical ethics and health policy, and neurology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. A member and fellow of many of Penn’s august interdisciplinary health think tanks, he directs the Penn Memory Center and the Alzheimer’s Disease Core Center. He also leads Penn’s Making Sense of Alzheimer’s forum, a project which captures the many dimensions  of Alzheimer’s through the perspective of caregivers, patients, artists, researchers and clinicians. Utilizing multi-media formats such as slideshows, video, and audio clips, along with written stories, the site explores the changing understanding of what Alzheimer’s is and how it affects our ethics and ideas of personhood.

The Problem of Alzheimers’s is currently available for preview via Macmillan Publishers, and will be available after its official publication date at Penn Libraries in print and as an e-book.

Dr. Karlawish last presented at the Biomedical Library in 2013 as part of the library’s Narrative Medicine event, as reported in the Summer 2013 Penn Medicine Magazine. At that event, he spoke about his book, Open wound : the tragic obsession of Dr. William Beaumont, an historical novel based on the life of 19th-century army surgeon William Beaumont, available in print through Penn Libraries. The Penn Gazette recently published a profile of Dr. Karlawish- "the Humanist is in".

Our Biomeditations talks are an informal conversation with Penn authors, welcoming participation from across the Penn community to hear from and ask questions about some of the most engaging and important topics in the health sciences, medical ethics and history, and related fields.
