The Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) is the most complete database of small organic and organometallic crystal structures, with over 1 million structures total.  This online training will teach participants the basics of using WebCSD and ConQuest to search the CSD, as well as basic visualization, measurement, and analysis using the Mercury application.  Topics covered will include:

  • Retrieving crystal structures deposited alongside known journal articles.
  • Performing basic and intermediate substructure queries of the CSD.
  • Determining average distances and angles in CSD structures.
  • Exporting crystal structure data to spreadsheet and visualization software.

This training is intended for chemists who require data from crystal structures in their research, but no prior experience searching CSD is required.  Attendees who are interested in following along on their own computers should make sure that the most recent CSD clients and updates are installed on their computers.  To download or update your installations, please visit https://guides.library.upenn.edu/csd, and select the link in the column labeled, "CSD Client Software - Penn Only."
